Former Manchester United coach explains why David de Gea could play for Man City

David de Gea is good enough to play for Manchester City or Barcelona despite his recent slump in form, according to his former Manchester United goalkeeping coach, Frans Hoek.

The Spain international could leave United this summer after the Reds' failure to qualify for next season's Champions League was confirmed by their abject 1-1 draw at relegated Huddersfield on Sunday.

De Gea's ambition is to add a Champions League winner's medal to his collection and Paris Saint-Germain are understood to be keen on a move, with current No.1 Gianluigi Buffon considering retirement at the age of 41.

High-profile blunders against Barcelona and Chelsea have marred the second half of De Gea's season after a questionable showing at last summer's World Cup, but Hoek, who was the goalkeeping coach under Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford, believes De Gea remains among the best in the world in his position.

Manchester United fans 'would love' Harry Maguire signing as transfer rumour resurfaces

"I worked with him for two years at Manchester United and I must say he's at a really high level," Hoek told Marca.

"It's not easy to play three games a week as is demanded in England and maintain a high level.

"Particularly when anyone can beat anyone there. But he does it.

"That's why it's unusual to see him make mistakes at international level. De Gea could play for Barcelona or [Manchester] City because playing with his feet is among his many qualities."
