Former Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho issues verdict on controversial England penalty

Former Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has declared that England's winning penalty against Denmark should not have been given.

Gareth Southgate's side fell behind in the semi-final at Wembley to Mikkel Damsgaard's free-kick but equalised before the break following Simon Kjaer's own goal.

The match then progressed to extra time, where Harry Kane scored the winning goal after smashing home the rebound having seen his penalty saved by Kasper Schmeichel.

England's spot-kick was controversial, with contact upon Raheem Sterling minimal, and Mourinho has slammed the decision that ultimately decided the game.

What will the score be between England and Italy? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

“Yes, amazing game, but I’m not sure you want to listen to my opinion. I say the way I see it, not the way it is. Maybe you don’t like my opinion this time," he told TalkSport.

“It’s never a penalty. The best team won, England deserve to win. England was fantastic, but for me it’s never a penalty.

“The best team won, England are a better team than Denmark. Denmark played the way I was expecting them to play on to their limits.

"England was really, really good and no doubt they deserved to win that match. But, for me, it’s never a penalty. At this level, a semi-final of a Euro I don’t understand really the referee’s decision.”

Southgate's side are now bracing themselves for the biggest England match since the 1966 World Cup final, having ended a 55-year wait to return to a major tournament final.

Roberto Mancini's Italy are England's opponents at Wembley, following Tuesday's penalty shoot-out victory against Spain.
