Former Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho issues advice to Mauricio Pochettino

Former Manchester United and Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has issued advice to Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino as speculation on his future continues to circle.

The Spurs boss had suggested that he could leave his current employers if he won the Champions League with the Lilywhites, in comments made ahead of the semi-final second-leg against Ajax.

Mourinho himself can relate to that, having left Porto and Inter Milan after winning Europe’s most prestigious prize with the two clubs, but admitted it was a decision that he has come to regret that call.

As such, Mourinho has urged Pochettino , who was heavily linked with a move to United as the Portuguese boss’ replacement, to remain in his current surroundings.

“I think he’s saying that he goes home, which is what we all do after matches, but I think he’s probably having a similar feeling that I had with Porto, when in an unexpected way you do something incredible that’s almost impossible to repeat,” he told BeIN Sports.

“When you are in the moment of your career when you have desire to do other things, maybe he’s saying that being European champion with Spurs, he goes home and waits for a different project. I don’t know.

“I would tell him not to do it because it’s something that I regret, that I never played in the Club World Cup because I left Porto and Inter when I felt it was finished.

“There can be lots of work to do at a club and many other things to play for, stay with the group of players that you love, that you are loved with a club, where you are given the best conditions to do it, the best support possible. I don’t think he has to leave if he wins the Champions League.”

However, Mourinho does believe that Pochettino cannot be considered to have done an amazing job with the north London side until he wins a trophy.

“I always say the work he has done is fantastic but now he needs to win something, you cannot consider it to be an amazing job if you’re in a club for four or five years, an amazing club, with fantastic players,” he explained.

“Everyone talks about the money they didn’t spend but I think the best thing is always not to buy, not to sell the top ones that you have. They have not been selling for the past few years so I think he has to win a trophy, even if it is the Carabao Cup.”
