Former Manchester City player Joey Barton charged with ABH

Former Manchester City player Joey Barton has been charged with actual bodily harm following an alleged attack in Barnsley.

The Fleetwood town manager, 36, is due to appear at Barnsley Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, October 9 following an incident in April.

Barnsley Football Club reported an attack on boss Daniel Stendel to police.

The incident allegedly happened in the tunnel following a League One match between Barnsley and Fleetwood at Oakwell last season, The Mirror reports.

Barnsley won 4-2 following the match, on April 13.

A statement from South Yorkshire police said: "A man has been charged following an incident at Barnsley Football Club in April 2019.

"Joseph Barton, 36, of Widnes, has been charged with actual bodily harm contrary to section 47 assault and has been bailed to appear before Barnsley Magistrates Court on Wednesday, October 9.

 "On Saturday, April 13, a man was left with facial injuries after an incident in the club tunnel around 5pm, following the conclusion of Barnsley's match against Fleetwood Town."

Barnsley lodged formal complaints with both the English Football League and the Football Association over the alleged incident after the match.
