Former Man City star takes aim at Liverpool transfer strategy and questions two players

Former Manchester City winger Trevor Sinclair has taken aim at Liverpool over their summer transfer plans.

So far this summer, the reigning Premier League champions have only added Konstantinos Tsimikas to their ranks.

And while there is continued speculation linking Thiago Alcantara with a move to Anfield, the ECHO understands the Bayern Munich star is not an active target for the club as things stand.

As a result, Sinclair believes Jurgen Klopp needs to be doing more in the transfer market and questioned the roles both James Milner and Joe Gomez can play this season.

“Things are not 100% at Liverpool, I don’t think,” he told talkSPORT. “They have only signed one player, which is Tsimikas.

“I think Klopp was quite harsh with the press [prior to Arsenal game] when they were talking about Wijnaldum because his contract expires next year. There is the potential that Thiago might come from Bayern. Wijnaldum might go to Barca.

“They haven’t really made any real key signings where other players are going to go, ‘Woah, I am delighted about that’.

“And I think you need that in a Championship winning side. Just to [shake it up], especially if you have got a real player who is going to come in and expect to play.

“Milner, he’s not going to be able to play as many key roles as he did last season. I think Joe Gomez had a real good season. But would you say he is a top, top centre-half? I think that’s an area where they could possibly strengthen.

“Is Nico Williams ready to play four, five games if Trent Alexander-Arnold does have a few games off? So, there are still areas that they can strengthen.

“You look at the front three. If one of them is injured. That kind of togetherness and effectiveness doesn’t seem to be there.

“I would say they really do need an outstanding forward player to give everyone in the squad a spring in their step.”
