Former Man City star says Leroy Sane could be as good as Lionel Messi

Former Man City star Shaun Wright-Phillips believes a fellow speedy winger Leroy Sane could one day be as good as Barcelona's Lionel Messi.

It's been a tough season for Sane who, due to the incredible form of Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva, has struggled to hold down a regular spot in the City starting eleven.

Most recently the German only played less than 10 minutes combined in both legs of City's heartbreaking Champions League quarter-final defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.

Fans were frustrated at Sane's lack of playing time as they feel he's a player who can make a real difference at the business end of the pitch.

Despite not featuring as heavily this season Sane has already beaten his goal tally from last year - 15 compared to 14 - and has also assisted a further 18 goals. All this in over 1,000 minutes less time on the pitch.

It's important to remember that Sane is still only 23 and he still has plenty of time to improve on the quality player he already is.

Which is exactly what Wright-Phillips believes he can do, even to the level of the best player in the world.

“I love watching Sane – he’s got so many great years ahead of him," Wright-Phillips, who made over 250 appearances for City in two stints, told Man City.

"Every time I see him play, I think he gets better and better so for me, I think he can reach whatever height he wants to.

"I don’t say this lightly, but I feel he has the potential to be as good as Lionel Messi.

"He creates goals, he scores goals and he entertain the crowd and, on his day, he’s unstoppable.

“I think so long as his focus is right and he works hard, I don’t see why can’t go all the way to the top.”
