Former Man City midfielder names the player who could have guided Liverpool FC to the title

Former Manchester City midfielder Danny Mills believes that Liverpool would be ahead of Pep Guardiola’s side if Joe Gomez had been fit for the entire campaign.

The Reds trail City by a single point heading into the final two matches of the season, with City knowing they will become the first side in a decade to retain their Premier League crown if they win both of their remaining matches.

It has been a sensational run of form for City, who trailed Liverpool by 10 points at the turn of the year, and they have battled back to make sure their fate is in their own hands after their recent derby victory against Manchester United.

However, according to Mills, the situation would have been different if the 21-year-old England international had been available to partner Virgil van Dijk for the entire campaign.

Liverpool FC handed major injury blow in title race with Man City

“I think defensively they’ve made massive improvements. Van Dijk has been a huge part of that, not just in the way that he plays – his influence, his leadership – so that’s been very important, I think that’s why he’s got player of the season,” he told Football Insider.

“Trent Alexander(-Arnold) has done very, very well, has been injured as well, been in and out.

“(Joe) Gomez has been a big miss. Imagine if he’d have been in the whole season alongside van Dijk. Liverpool might be closer, further ahead of Man City at the moment.”
