Former Man City manager Manuel Pellegrini explains how his tactics beat Manchester United

Manuel Pellegrini has explained the tactics behind Manchester City's win against Manchester United in September 2013.

The game was the first Manchester derby for Pellegrini and new United manager David Moyes who replaced Sir Alex Ferguson in the summer.

City ran out comfortable winners after going ahead through first-half goals from Sergio Aguero and Yaya Toure.

Aguero netted again shortly after the interval before Samir Nasri added insult to injury and ensured Wayne Rooney's late strike was nothing more than a consolation.

Pellegrini stated that it was City's intention to play an attacking line-up, regardless of their opposition.

The Chilean believes the technical ability of the City squad resulted in the victory rather than the system he utiliised.

"I think it was one of the first things maybe that we demonstrated, in front of the whole squad that this team was going to attack no matter who were playing against," he told The Coaches' Voice.

"We were going to play the same.

"Playing [Alvaro] Negredo and Aguero both up front and putting in attacking midfielders, I think this was one of the reasons why this team always believed in what we were doing when we played against all the big teams the same way.

"That match I remember especially too because we approached it focusing more on doing what we did well rather than being on the lookout for what Manchester United did.

"I think it's really important when you are trying to instil a big-team mentality, going out to attack, that you keep your idea about football."

"I think the system is the least important thing. The important thing is the players themselves.

"I think that year we brought together players who had great technical ability and we were able to play this way, fortunately, it allowed us to beat our biggest rival Manchester United 4-1 at home in that match."
