Former Man City defender gives verdict on Aymeric Laporte's future amid Barcelona transfer links

Former Manchester City defender Eric Garcia has given his verdict on Aymeric Laporte amid alleged Barcelona interest.

Garcia left the Catalan club for City in 2017, featuring 35 times for Pep Guardiola's side before deciding against signing a new contract with the Blues.

Instead, he opted to go back to Barcelona, agreeing to join the Blaugrana this summer, alongside former City teammate Sergio Aguero.

A number of City stars have also been linked with a move to Ronald Koeman's team, with Aymeric Laporte the latest to be rumoured to be unhappy with his role at the Etihad.

Garcia claimed he hadn't talked with Laporte about linking up at the Camp Nou next season but admitted he would love to play alongside the 27-year-old again.

“Aymeric Laporte coming to Barcelona? I don’t know", Garcia told SPORT.

"We haven’t talked about this. We are focused on the Euros, but if he comes to us, obviously he’s a great player.”

However, a deal is unlikely to be done this summer as M.E.N Sport understands that City are not interested in player-swap deals with Barcelona and the Catalans are unlikely to be able to afford to pay the money for Laporte due to their mounting debt.

Garcia and Laporte were both called up by the Spanish national team for Euro 2020 this summer and Laporte started his side's 0-0 draw with Sweden on Monday night, putting in a stellar display at the back for the three-time European champions.
