Former Man City chairman Eric Alexander passes away

Manchester City have announced that former chairman and honorary president Eric Alexander has passed away.

Born in 1933 and educated at Manchester Grammar School, Alexander was brought onto the board in the 1960s when his father Albert was club chairman, a golden period for the Blues. With Joe Mercer and Malcolm Allison in charge and Colin Bell one of the many talented players on show, the team won domestic and European honours.

Eric became chairman in 1971, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather to continue three generations of association between the Alexanders and City . Under his time, the club spent a club-record fee to sign Rodney Marsh from QPR - who would later admit that he cost the team the league title that year.

While Alexander left his post a year later when Peter Swales took over, he served as a director into the next decade and remained an honorary president at the club until his death.
