Former Love Island star Callum Jones reveals what it's like to be a contestant on the dating show

He was one of the most talked about contestants on last year's winter edition of Love Island and Manchester's Callum Jones is excited for the new batch of Islanders for 2021.

Callum caused waves when he dumped Shaughna Phillips after finding love in the dreaded Casa Amor, the neighbouring villa to the main house, with model Molly Smith.

Since leaving the villa he and Molly, also from Manchester, have proven doubters wrong by going from strength to strength following their whirlwind romance - and he says going on the ITV dating show was one of the best experiences of his life.

Asked what it was like knowing that the eyes of millions of viewers were watching almost his every move, Callum said: "You go in there as yourself and you don't expect that you're going to win it.

"You go on there to enjoy it."

The show uses cameras around the TV villa to capture every new coupling, argument and mugging off.

But the former scaffolder says he and his fellow Islanders forgot the cameras, which are rolling 24/7, were even there.

"You kind of switch off," he explained.

"You don't think that you're on a TV programme, it felt like I was just enjoying an experience.

"I didn't have any expectations. I just thought 'see what happens' and it was one of the best times of my life."

He added: “It was an amazing experience living in a luxury villa but mainly meeting Molly and the other contestants who quickly became good mates of mine."

Asked what advice he would give the new cast for 2021 he said: "When I went in there I didn't have any expectations and it worked."

Reflecting on signing up for the show and how he felt walking into the villa for the first time he said watching this year will bring back good memories for him.

Callum, who who has been spending time exploring his passion for cooking, boxing and fitness in lockdown, says he's still in touch with some of his fellow Islanders and they have a WhatsApp group.

"I thought to myself 'what's the worst that can happen?' and I applied," he said.

"I felt like everyone was nervous."

Watching the episodes back Callum, 25, says it felt 'strange' - and he would be up for returning one day for a reunion.

"Get me back," he enthused.

"I'd love to go back.

"This year's Islanders are going to get a great experience."

The new series of Love Island starts next Monday June 28 at 9pm on ITV2.
