Former Lord Mayor of Dublin says he'd 'rip up' any invitation to RIC commemoration ceremony

A former Lord Mayor of Dublin said he'd "rip up and recycle" an invitation to the national commemoration service for the Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC).

Plans are set to go ahead for a government commemoration of the RIC including the Special Reserve (Black and Tans) who were recruited to fight on the British side in the war of independence.

The event is set to recognise those who served in the RIC and Dublin Met police before the groups were disbanded in 1922.

Last week the mayor of Clare Cathal Crowe declined an invitation from Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan calling the event "a step to far".

Fianna Fail's Crowe said he didn't have a problem with those who worked for the RIC in his native county but that commemorating "a strong-arm of the British state in Ireland" was wrong.

Now former Lord Mayor of Dublin Christy Burke has blasted the idea calling it an "insult" due to the "cruel damage" caused by the group.

Although an invitation hasn't been extended to the councillor, he said he'd "rip it up and put it in the recycle bin" if it came his way.

He wrote: "In relation to the ceremony been held at Dublin castle for the Black and Tans if I receive an invitation for the event I'll rip it up and put in the recycle bin.

"I'm totally opposed to the idea of the Black and tans receiving a ceremony in Dublin castle, it's an insult to the men, women and children between the rising an our independence and my reason for this is as follows.

"It’s a step to far, the tans are not welcome they done cruel damage to Irish citizens which included, murder, rape and cost mayhem in every county in Ireland."
