Former Lord Mayor of Cork Des Cahill left 'hurt' after election poster destroyed for the second time

Former Lord Mayor of Cork Des Cahill has been left "hurt" after a large poster at his house was defaced for the second time this election campaign.

Fine Gael candidate Cahill had a large poster in his front garden covered in gloss paint, destroying his front wall in the process.

This is almost exactly a month after a similar attack at his house in the build up to the elections.

Speaking to Cork Live, Cllr Cahill said: "The poster was erected at home last night and gloss paint thrown at wall just after 2am.

"The last occasion this happened my wife and two children traveled to my wife’s family for a week as they felt in fear.

"Putting your name before the public leave one self open for criticism, however democracy is about discussing policy rather than attacking privacy in a criminal, cowardly manner.

"Cork City Fire Brigade were also called to posters of mine which were burned on Temple Hill.

"I have been hurt by this but it certainly will not stop me from representing the people of Cork.

"Moreover it will motivate me more to continue working hard and delivering for the people that elect me I will not be intimidated by these cowards who possibly need mental assessment."

Gardai are investigating the incident and are appealing for anyone who can assist them to come forward.

Cllr. Cahill added: "Last time it was a man on a bicycle between 5 and 6am that threw the tin of paint at my house.

"It was the same colour paint this time but at 2am.

"Gardaí have again removed the can of paint for forensic fingerprinting.

"Look it’s disturbing when it gets personal, I got in to politics to help people in the community I live."
