Former London Marathon winner Daniel Wanjiru suspended for alleged doping violation

Former London Marathon winner Daniel Wanjiru has been provisionally suspended by the Athletics Integrity Unit for use of a prohibited substance.

The Kenyan held off the challenge of Kenenisa Bekele to win on the capital’s streets in 2017, but yesterday the AIU said that he had been charged with a doping infringement.

Wanjiru was also victorious in the 2016 Amsterdam Marathon, and finished in the top 15 in the past two London Marathons.

The 27-year-old is the latest high-profile Kenyan to face doping charges weeks after two-time winner Wilson Kipsang was suspended. Both athletes protest their innocence.
