Former Liverpool youngster admits he regrets making Anfield move after "false promises"

Former Liverpool academy star Herbie Kane claims the Reds failed to live up to the promises which lured him to Anfield as a 15-year-old.

Kane moved to Merseyside in 2013 after coming through the ranks at Bristol City and was tipped to achieve great things with Liverpool.

But the midfielder failed to break into Jurgen Klopp's first-team squad and was sent out on loan to Doncaster Rovers and Hull City.

Kane departed for Barnsley in October this year after making just two senior appearances for Liverpool, both of which came in last season's Carabao Cup.

The Championship side secured his services for £1.25million and Kane admitted his regret over joining Liverpool in one of the club's recent matchday programmes.

"It's not something I've really looked back at before, but I think with reflection, I'd probably stay at Bristol City if I had to make the same decision again," said Kane.

"In terms of Liverpool, I've got to be honest, it wasn't the best.

"A lot of things are promised to you when they're trying to sign you, but nothing ever came of it - but that can be football in general to be honest.

"The only way I can explain what it was like for me there was how when you're playing as a kid and you're picking the teams, and you're the last one picked.

"It was that kind of feeling. It wasn't the best for me there, but it was a valuable experience and I probably wouldn't be here at Barnsley without it."

Kane, 22, has made 13 appearances for Barnsley this season - though 10 of those have been from the bench - helping the club to ninth in the table.

Barnsley sit four points adrift of the play-off spots and return to action against Swansea on Saturday.
