Former Liverpool title winner makes 'proactive' Manchester United transfer claim

Liverpool had a quiet transfer window this summer with one new addition in RB Leipzig defender Ibrahima Konate.

As the club focused on handing key players bumper new contracts, sections of supporters grew frustrated with the lack of business.

Elsehwere, rivals Manchester United brought in the likes of Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Liverpool legend Ray Houghton wasn't surprised by the Red Devils splashing the cash this summer as he feels they've got the resources.

"Manchester United like Liverpool are a world club, but the amount of money that they generate from advertising and sponsorship revenue supersedes Liverpool," Houghton told PaddyPower.

"Man United have always been more proactive than Liverpool over the years.

"This goes back to the ‘70s when Liverpool were winning everything still, but Man United were out there selling the club and they were generating lots of money, and that’s continued.

"If you look at their annual returns, United’s is far greater than Liverpool, so they’ve got more money to spend and they’ve bought well."

Liverpool and United are expected to be among the clubs battling it out for the title this season along with Manchester City and Chelsea.

But the Reds have been outspent by their rivals as City signed Jack Grealish for £100m, while Chelsea brought in Romelu Lukaku for £97.5m and midfielder Saul Niguez on loan.

Liverpool, Chelsea and United remain top of the Premier League table after matchday four, level on points and goal difference.

After losing to Tottenham in their opening league game, Pep Guardiola's side sit fifth on nine points.
