Former Liverpool target Timo Werner completes transfer to Chelsea

Timo Werner has completed his transfer from RB Leipzig to Chelsea.

The London side have reportedly paid £47.5million to complete the signing and Werner will join on a five-year contract worth more than £170,000-a-week.

The Germany international is set to link-up with Frank Lampard's side at the end of the Bundesliga season in July, subject to completing a medical, after informing Leipzig that he does not want to play for them in the delayed Champions League competition in order to get ready for next season as soon as posisble.

Werner, 24, is Chelsea's second signing after Hakim Ziyech and the frontman - who looked set to join Liverpool until the coronavirus pandemic - is said to have been convinced by Lampard and performance advisor Petr Cech after they made a pre-lockdown trip to speak to the player, his agent and family.

The latest news will come as a blow to the Anfield faithful who were excited about the prospect of a talented young forward in Werner linking up with the likes of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.

Werner said: "I am delighted to be signing for Chelsea, it is a very proud moment for me to be joining this great club.

"I of course want to thank RB Leipzig, the club and the fans, for four fantastic years. You will forever be in my heart.

"I look forward to next season with my new team-mates, my new manager and of course the Chelsea fans. Together we have a very successful future ahead of us."
