Former Liverpool striker Peter Crouch announces his retirement

Former Liverpool striker Peter Crouch has announced he is set to retire from football.

The 6ft 7in striker won the FA Cup in 2006 with the Reds and is still held in the highest regard by the Anfield faithful despite leaving more than a decade ago.

The former England international joined Liverpool in 2005 from Southampton under Rafael Benitez in a £7million deal.

He wrote on Twitter : "After a lot of deliberation this summer I have decided to retire from football!

"Our wonderful game has given me everything. I’m so thankful to everyone who helped me get there and to help me stay there for so long. X"

Crouch took some time to get his career on Merseyside up and running but when he finally ended an 18-goal drought against Wigan in somewhat fortuitous circumstances there was no looking back.

He scored 42 goals for Liverpool including a number of overhead kicks.

The assist and clever knockdown Crouch provided in the FA Cup final allowed Reds legend Steven Gerrard to level proceedings before Bentiez's then side claimed the trophy.

His perfect left foot, right foot and headed hat-trick against Arsenal in 2007 was one to remember as was the robot dancing and his humour.
