Former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez suffers new setback after Champions League humiliation with Barcelona

It hasn't been the best of weeks for former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez.

Suarez spoke on Monday ahead of Barcelona's Champions League semi-final second leg against Jurgen Klopp's side the following night.

The Uruguayan, preparing for his first competitive appearance at Anfield following his £70million switch to Camp Nou in 2014, said he expected more cheers than jeers from the crowd.

However, Suarez's manic celebrations when scoring during Barcelona's 3-0 win in the first leg the previous week did not sit kindly with the Reds faithful.

And having been roundly criticised by the Anfield crowd throughout the match, the ex- Liverpool forward was on the receiving end of arguably the greatest comeback in Champions League history as Klopp's men triumphed 4-0 to reach next month's final against Tottenham Hotspur in Madrid.

Suarez walked straight off the pitch at the final whistle.

Now it appears the 32-year-old won't be seen again this season and is in danger of missing part of this summer's Copa America with Uruguay after undergoing knee surgery on Thursday night.

A Barcelona statement read: "First team player Luis Suarez has undergone an arthroscopy on his right knee for an internal meniscal injury, by Dr Cugat and under the supervision of the club medical services.

"The approximate time of recovery is between four and six weeks."
