Former Liverpool striker hits out at 'jealous' rivals over Reds' Premier League title bid

Former Liverpool striker Dean Saunders has had his say on why man rival supporters do not want the Reds to lift the Premier League title.

Jurgen Klopp’s side returned to the summit of the league after victory over Chelsea on Sunday, emerging victorious from another tie where some predicted they would stumble in their bid to end a 29-year wait for the title.

That result has put the pressure on Manchester City as they head into two very tough tests in the Premier League, tackling Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United - the latter of which is their game in hand.

How rivals fans really feel about Liverpool winning the Premier League title

While Liverpool still require assistance from elsewhere as it stands to lift the title, a growing sense of inevitability has started to emerge about Klopp’s side and their bid to clinch a first top-flight title since 1990.

However, that is not going down well with some rival fans who are desperate to see Liverpool fail - and Saunders has accused them of jealousy.

Julian Brandt fits the bill for Liverpool's summer transfer plans - with roles reversed for 2017 target

“Can you understand why people don’t like Man City? Because they think they’ve bought the title, two rich people have come in and lifted Man City up to the top. That’s why people don’t like them,” he told TalkSport.

“Why would you not like Liverpool? I’m not just saying it because my Dad played for Liverpool and I played for Liverpool, I’m not saying it because of that.

“The manager is a decent bloke, the club have won everything the right way, they don’t lump it, they’re not aggressive.

“Maybe it’s because Bill Shankly has sort of put the club on it’s road, taken over by Bob Paisley and Joe Fagan, Dalglish. Maybe people don’t like that, perhaps they are a bit jealous because of the way Liverpool have come right through from the history of football.

“Then there’s other teams that just arrived there through cash, maybe that’s what it is.”
