Former Liverpool star Xherdan Shaqiri has just matched Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo at the World Cup

Xherdan Shaqiri added his name to the list of players who have scored in each of the last three World Cups as he sits alongside Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The former Liverpool attacker scored the opening goal for Switzerland in their 3-2 win over Serbia on Friday as they secured their place in the last-16 in Qatar.

Shaqiri, who now plays in the MLS with Chicago Fire, scored against Serbia four years ago and netted a hat-trick when taking on Honduras back in 2014.

Portugal's Ronaldo became the first player ever to score in five World Cups when he converted a penalty against Ghana in their opening game of the tournament while Messi is the only other player to score in the last three competitions.

Messi found the net from the spot in Argentina's shock loss to Saudi Arabia before scoring a vital goal in the crucial win over Mexico.

Shaqiri's Switzerland side will now take on Ronaldo's Portugal for a place in the quarter-finals of the World Cup.
