Former Liverpool star Xabi Alonso responds to Man City and Arsenal coaching links

Former Liverpool star Xabi Alonso has responded to speculation linking him with jobs at both Manchester City and Arsenal.

Mikel Arteta is in talks with Arsenal about taking over the head coach role which was vacated by Unai Emery last month when he was sacked.

An array of names including Carlo Ancelotti, Patrick Vieira, Massimiliano Allegri, Brendan Rodgers and Nuno Espirito Santo have been linked with Arsenal but it's Arteta who is the club's favourite.

City are 'furious' that the Gunners didn't ask permission to speak to the Spaniard first but it's understood they will not stand in the way of Pep Guardiola's assistant.

But there is another former midfielder who has also been linked with Arsenal and that's Alonso, who is unlikely to make the switch from his current position as manager of Real Sociedad B.

Alonso has not only been linked with Arsenal but speculation has also associated the former Spain international with replacing Arteta at the Blues. The 38-year-old has now responded to those rumours.

"I’m at ease here, my head is only here," Alonso told Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo. "I have no other thoughts. No proposal has come to me and I am where I want to be. I’m very happy.

"After finishing my career as a player, being able to start another one and return to San Sebastian, to my club, seeing how things are being done, is a pleasure.

"Things are going well. I’m just starting, I’m enjoying it and it’s serving me well. When the club and I decided to work here, everything made sense. Over time you reaffirm that it was a good decision.

"I have fitted in with the players since arriving and I am working to acquire knowledge, experiences, getting it right, making mistakes, correcting and then gradually finding the way."
