Former Liverpool star sends message to fans over player linked with Bristol City and Nottingham Forest

Lucas Leiva has given his backing to a rumoured Bristol City target.

Crewe Alexandra defender Perry Ng was nominated for League Two player of the weekend for his goal in a 1-1 draw with Morecambe.

It prompted former Liverpool midfielder Leiva to urge his followers to vote for Ng in the poll.

He said: "Let's vote for my Scouse mate from Crewe."

Leiva's interjection saw Ng scoop the award with 89.5 per cent of the 11,317 votes cast.

The full-back was last month linked with Bristol City, Nottingham Forest and Derby County among others, and is clearly not letting the attention distract him from his football.

Ng, 23, scooped Crewe's player of the year and players' player of the year award last season and then penned a new contract in the summer, being announced as captain of the side.

An attacking full-back, Ng has netted twice for Crewe this season and has also impressed with his range of passing ability.

The Robins are likely to be on the lookout for a new right-back in the summer, with Pedro Pereira set to return to Benfica at the end of his loan spell.

With City having switched between playing with wingers and wing-backs this season, Ng's attacking instincts could well see him targeted.

Whilst Ng, who is eligible to play for the Singapore national team, hails from Liverpool, it is unclear how he knows Leiva.

Ng spent from 2004 to 2014 in Crewe's youth set-up before making his senior debut.

Leiva, now at Lazio, spent 10 years at Anfield, making over 250 appearances for the club before leaving in 2017.

He became a cult hero at Liverpool, and clearly still has the ability to wield his influence over fans - with plenty on Twitter pointing out they only voted in the poll because the 33-year-old Brazilian had told them to.
