Danny Murphy has taken aim at Arsenal’s board over their decision not to appoint Brendan Rodgers ahead of Unai Emery.
The Spaniard saw his reign at the Gunners brought to an end on Friday morning, with the club opting to part company after a poor start to the season.
Freddie Ljungberg has been placed in temporary charge while a permanent replacement is sought, with Rodgers, Max Allegri and Mauricio Pochettino all linked with the role.
And according to media reports over the weekend, Rodgers is the Gunners’ preferred candidate to take over, but Murphy believes the north London club have “missed the boat” and the Northern Irishman will remain at Leicester.
“I’m far from a genius, but I’ve been watching Premier League football for a long time,” the former Liverpool man told talkSPORT.
“I’ve known Brendan for a long time...well erm I’ve met him and I know him responsibly well and he was an obvious choice for the job before Emery got the job, and he was an obvious choice for Everton before Silva got the job.

“They've missed the boat for him and it's their own fault.
"Why is he now perfect for the job but wasn’t then? He’s knows the Premier League and he’s tactically very aware.
“What he did at Liverpool when they nearly won the league and changed the system midway through the season when they had a little falter...playing Sterling in the diamond.
“He was a game away from having a statue outside Anfield, in some respects. The problem with Arsenal is that they are always too late for this stuff, they are always too late.
"And I don't think he'll go, not now."
