Former Liverpool star on Reds' advantage over Man City - and why it makes them title favourites

Former Liverpool striker Emile Heskey has explained why his old side have the mental advantage in the Premier League title race.

The Reds are currently going toe to toe with Manchester City as they aim to oust the reigning champions.

Liverpool had led City by seven points at the turn of the year only for Pep Guardiola’s side to take over at the top thanks to the Reds’ draw at Everton.

But Jurgen Klopp’s men managed to move two points clear thanks to a 2-1 victory at Fulham on Sunday, with Man City taking a break from the Premier League due to their commitments in the FA Cup.

Liverpool now have a chance to retain their lead at the top until City make the game up when they travel to Manchester United on Wednesday, April 24, with Heskey firm in his belief that the Reds have the edge.

“Psychologically it’s very important,” Heskey told Sky Sports. “As you saw before, they were always having to chase Manchester City, they were always trying to stay ahead. Now they’ve got the upper hand.

“It’s better to have the points in hand rather than having to go out there and fight for it.

“Manchester City have got to go into the next game knowing that they need to win that game, putting the pressure back on them and seeing how they fare with that pressure.”
