Former Liverpool star Mario Balotelli 'pays bar owner to drive moped into the sea'

Former Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli is back in the headlines after he reportedly paid a bar owner thousands to drive his moped into the sea.

The Italian striker, who endured a disappointing spell at Liverpool, has shared footage on Instagram of the stunt while on holiday in Mergellina near Naples, Italy.

The 28-year-old appears to be seen making a bet with an owner of a bar.

The man is then seen getting onto his Vespa while wearing nothing but his underwear.

He then proceeds to ride it off the street and straight into the sea before resurfacing to get his money off Balotelli.

Balotelli filmed the clip and can be heard in the background while he later posted a clip of the engine trying to be started.

He wrote: "Philosophers... here is the 'polluting' Vespa fished out."

The ex-Reds star, who is currently without a club after his contract with French side Marseille ended last month, is reported to have offered the man €2,000 (£1,800) to carry out the bizarre stunt.

He was later seen pocketing the cash, apparently telling Italian media: "My moped was only worth £540 anyway".

But Balotelli then denied that he had paid the man to drive his moped into the sea.

He posted a message to his Instagram followers, adding: "I wanted to clarify that the bet was not monetised but it was a whole scene for a joke."
