Former Liverpool star backs Reds to mount another Premier League title charge after Man City defeat

Former Liverpool midfielder Steve McManaman believes the Reds have enough in their squad to mount another Premier League title bid despite their defeat in Sunday's Community Shield.

Jurgen Klopp 's side have so far been rather inactive in this summer's window, with only youngsters Harvey Elliott and Sepp van den Berg joining the club.

It's a far cry from last summer, when the Reds splashed out big to secure the services of Alisson Becker, Naby Keita, Fabinho and Xherdan Shaqiri.

Klopp's side then went onto to secure their sixth European Cup , and missed out on the Premier League title by just a single point to Manchester City.

And the Reds were the better team against Pep Guardiola 's side as they suffered a penalty shoot-out defeat in the Community Shield at Wembley.

But despite some supporters believing the club should be looking to improve once again this summer, McManaman, who made 272 appearances in a nine year spell with the Reds, believes Klopp is more than happy with the squad he currently has.

"I think Jurgen is happy with what he has got, but you could always strengthen if the right person becomes available for the right price," McManaman told BT Sport following Liverpool 's defeat to Manchester City in the Community Shield.

"I don’t think Liverpool’s finances are as strong this year as they was last year, and I think they may have to sell players, or sell some of the fringe players to free up a bit of money.

“But what we had today and what we saw on the bench and the ones who are not involved, you would certainly think they have got enough."

But despite the disappointing penalty shootout defeat for the Reds at Wembley, McManaman believes there is nothing between the two sides ahead of the start of the Premier League season.

He said post-match: “They are incredibly close. One team hasn’t hammered the other.

"They are very much on a par, and I think that is what Jurgen Klopp will take from this game.

“He’s had a mixed pre-season, but he is up against the best around and they have ran them really close.

“That is the thing he will take from it."
