Former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso on shortlist for managerial role with imminent departure expected

Former Liverpool great Xabi Alonso has been linked with taking over as manager at Club Brugge after being named as a potential candidate for the role.

Current manager Philippe Clement is said to be leaving the position 'imminently' amid Brugge's links with the Spanish World Cup winner.

Clement is reportedly in 'advanced' talks to join Ligue 1 side Monaco and Brugge could turn to Alonso should they fail to land their number one target.

Alonso is currently the manager of La Liga 2 side Real Sociedad B having previously worked with Real Madrid's academy between 2018 and 2019.

According to Dutch outlet Het Laatste Nieuws, the former Liverpool midfielder is on the shortlist along with Frank de Boer, Mark van Bommel and favoured candidate Alfred Schreuder.

Alonso was part of the legendary Liverpool side to win their fifth Champions League in Istanbul back in 2005, scoring the all-important equalising goal in the second half.

The Spaniard spent five years at Liverpool and made 143 appearances at the club where he was adored by the fans.
