Ex-Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva slams 'irresponsible' reports over retirement after health scare

Former Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva has slammed journalists for publishing false information about his future playing career after being pulled from Gremio training last week.

The 35-year-old was taken out of training after a potential heart issue was detected during routine screening and his future in now up in the air.

Lucas, who spent 10 years at Anfield after leaving boyhood club Gremio back in 2007, took to social media to dismiss rumours he was going to retire due to the suspected heart problem spotted.

Last Tuesday the Brazil international tweeted a statement from the club confirming the discovery of what was described as an 'alteration of the cardiac rhythm', and the subsequent removal from training.

Lucas posted on Twitter: "I don't know what makes a journalist so eager to 'break the news'. Suddenly seek credibility in the market or morale in the company. Claiming that I will retire in the next few weeks is irresponsible.

"It would be better to ask me my desire than to look for it in other sources. My son called me shocked by the 'information'. Would you like this? These days everything crossed my mind! You can't imagine what it's like to change your routine so unexpectedly.

"What will become of my future? I still do not know. My will is to continue helping the club I love, if it is not possible I will be the first to inform my family, friends and Gremio fans. So far I only ask RESPECT! Thanks."
