Former Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson shaped Marine future in Norway car journey

Former Liverpool and England manager Roy Hodgson 'made a mark' on the man hoping to plot the ultimate FA Cup upset against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

Marine boss Neil Young was assistant of Welsh Premier outfit Rhyl when they faced Viking Stavanger - managed by Hodgson - in the UEFA Cup in August 2005.

Hodgson would be appointed by Liverpool five years later but helped Young scout his own team by taking him on a car journey through Norway to the stadium.

The Marine manager - whose first role in management came with Queen's Park in the Birkenhead Sunday League at 24 because of a recurring dislocated shoulder - admitted the advice the future England manager imparted will 'stick with him forever'.

Young told the ECHO : "It was part of the learning curve and a great opportunity.

"I was afforded an opportunity against Viking Stavanger, and Roy Hodgson - believe it or not - gave us a lift in his car into Viking Stavanger when we went to watch them the week before we played them in the UEFA Cup.

"He was just a genuine, open and nice guy so to be able to spend about an hour in his company, with some of his stories and advice, as a young coach at that time, that really made a mark on me.

"It is one of the memories that will stick with me forever, as will Sunday."
