Former Liverpool man singles out surprise "genius" in Reds training sessions

Former Liverpool goalkeeper Adam Bogdan namechecked a surprise ex-teammate when discussing the best players he trained with at the club's Melwood base.

Hungary international Bogdan is currently without a club following the expiration of his four-year Reds deal at the end of last season, with the 31-year-old leaving the Reds having played just six games for the Merseysiders.

The former Bolton stopper signed for Brendan Rodgers in the summer of 2015, before Rodgers was axed that October and replaced in the Reds hotseat by Jurgen Klopp.

Plenty of excellent players have come and gone at Anfield under the tutelage of the German, but Bogdan says that a long forgotten ex-Red was a "genius" in five-a-side matches.

“There were a lot (of impressive players in training)," said Bogdan in an interview with the Liverpool Echo .

"Sturridge, his finishing is amazing. From one step, he could find any corner.

“Coutinho was amazing as well… I don’t know what words I should say as I’ll say amazing for other players as well.

“Lazar Markovic was a genius in five-a-side games. It’s really, really hard to pick one.

“You play against Milner who will run for two hours, he will graft and score goals in training. Henderson is very similar."

And while the names of Daniel Sturridge, Philippe Coutinho, James Milner and Jordan Henderson would come as no surprise, that of Markovic certainly does.

There were high hopes for the Serbian when he arrived at Anfield from Benfica for £20million in the summer of 2014, but he too often flattered to deceive.

He played 34 times for the Reds in his debut season, but then never featured in a competitive game for them again as he embarked on a series of loan moves before joining Fulham in January this year, only playing once.

He re-signed for his former club Partizan Belgrade on a free transfer this summer.
