Former Liverpool man issues strong defence of Jose Mourinho in Jurgen Klopp comparison

Former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock has issued a strong defence of Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho after the 1-0 defeat at home to the Reds on Saturday.

Liverpool continued their dominance in the Premier League by pulling off the victory thanks to Roberto Firmino's goal.

Mourinho set his stall out to try and stifle Liverpool which worked during parts of the game but he was also accused of approaching the encounter with a negative attitude.

The Portuguese manager's well-known pragmatic philosophy showed its face again and this has led to some accusations that Mourinho is outdated, but Warnock took a different view during an appearance on Sky Sports this morning.

Instead, the former Liverpool player was quick to defend Mourinho and insist that it will take time for Tottenham to get used to his style of play, something which the Reds also had to work through when Jurgen Klopp originally took over back in 2015.

"We can say now Mourinho sat back and it was the wrong thing to do because they lost the game," Warnock told Sky Sports.

"But if they had drawn the game we would be saying that's Mourinho and tactically he got it spot on again. If Son takes that chance and they draw 1-1, it's a good tactic.

"But how do you play against Liverpool if you haven't got that quality to go and really attack them. There is a reason they are in such a good run of form. Tactically they are very good.

"Spurs are still getting to get the grips with who they are. It took Klopp over a year to get that out of Liverpool.

"People are having a go at Mourinho and I don't get it. He is trying to adapt his style of football at the moment but it's a fine balance.

"He wants to give people attacking football but he knows he has to be so careful. You don't want to be on a hiding at home to Liverpool. Where do you go from there?"
