Former Liverpool Labour cabinet members seize key council positions in new administration

Former cabinet members and allies of ex mayor Joe Anderson seized key council positions in votes held last night.

Mr Anderson has been replaced as Mayor of Liverpool by Joanne Anderson, who was elected to run the city in a historic election earlier this month.

The former mayor stepped aside after he was arrested as part of a corruption investigation, which led to a government inspection that reported a shocking number of failures at the council and led to key departments being taken over by government commissioners.

Mr Anderson has denied any wrongdoing and described that government report as full of 'lies and smears.'

The new Mayor Anderson wasted no time in stamping her authority on the council, removing the entire existing cabinet that had been appointed by her predecessor and replacing them with a very new, very young team.

But at a meeting last night, the ruling Labour group voted to install a number of the former cabinet members - as well as long term allies of the former mayor - into key positions at the council.

The votes were held to decide who would take up the influential roles of chairing select committees and other key committees that help to scrutinise and shape council policies and decision making.

Croxteth Cllr Barry Kushner, who held a number of cabinet roles under Joe Anderson's administration was voted in as chair of the council's Finance and Resources Select Committee, beating West Derby Cllr Nick Crofts to the post.

Another former cabinet member, Barbara Murray, who held the education brief in the last administration, was voted in as chair of the Education and Skills Select Committee.

Kirkdale Councillor Joe Hanson has been one of Mr Anderson's closest allies on the council and he fended off competition from Greenbank Councillor Laura Robertson-Collins to secure the role of chair of the Neighbourhoods and Community select committee.

Long-standing married councillors Roz and Roy Gladden were voted in as chairs of the Adults and Children's Social Care and Culture and Visitor Economy committees respectively.

The key roles of chair of licensing and planning also went to long-standing Labour councillors Christine Banks and Tony Concepcion - who both ran unopposed for their positions.

The votes - held amongst all serving Labour councillors except cabinet members - show that while there is a new mayor and a new-look top team, the old guard of the group still have a significant influence.

It will be interesting to see what dynamic now forms as the new-look cabinet works in tandem with these committee chairs from a different section of the ruling group.

Other roles went to Riverside Councillor Hetty Wood, who will chair the Development and Economy select committee, while Anfield Councillor Lena Simic will chair the Climate Emergency and Environment committee.
