Former Liverpool forward shares transfer regret as he admits he should never have left Anfield

Ryan Babel has admitted he should never have left Liverpool after conceding his transfer to Hoffenheim was a panic move.

The 32-year-old moved to Anfield from Ajax in 2007, but failed to secure a starting role during his time on Merseyside and left for the Bundesliga club days before Fernando Torres' departure to Chelsea and Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll's arrivals in January 2011.

Having struggled in Germany, the 32-year-old returned to Ajax before stints at Kasımpasa, Al-Ain and Deportivo La Coruna.

A member of the Netherlands squad that reached the 2010 World Cup Final, Babel was an unused substitute throughout the tournament and has cited losing his place in the national set-up following the tournament as a key reason behind his decision to leave Liverpool.

Winning just three caps before being handed an international recall in 2017 after rebuilding his career at Besiktas, the forward is now back in England with Fulham and begrudgingly scored in their defeat to his former side last weekend.

Ryan Babel asked if he exposed Virgil van Dijk's 'weakness' during Liverpool win at Fulham

And speaking to Voetbol International, Babel revealed Liverpool didn't want to sell him and he wishes he had never left the club.

"I went to Liverpool at a young age, but I played quite a lot in my first year," he said. "The club wanted to keep me, but yes, I was out of the picture with the Dutch national team.

"With the knowledge of today I know that I then I made a panic move to Hoffenheim.

"Now they are a respected, stable sub-elite club, who are around eleventh, twelfth in the table.

"Afterwards I should have stayed at Liverpool, I was not so bad at all there."
