Former Liverpool FC midfielder makes Manchester United and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer claim

Former Liverpool midfielder Jason McAteer has claimed that Manchester United are in a 'false' position in the table and has questioned Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's leadership.

United 's spot in the top-four is secured and the club are expected to seal second spot in the Premier League, sitting four points above Leicester City with two games remaining.

The campaign has seen a considerable improvement from United, who are set to compete in the Europa League final against Villarreal later this month, with Solskjaer 's side standing as City's closest competitors this season - albeit never truly putting Pep Guardiola's side under significant pressure.

However, despite those achievements, McAteer has stated that United's position isn't a true reflection of the club and believes Solskjaer's lacks what is required to take United further.

“If everything were normal this season, then I don’t think they would be that far ahead in the top four,” McAteer told Free Super Tips.

“I don’t think they’d be sitting in second in the Premier League, so, in that respect, they are in a false position. There’s still a lot of work to be done for them and I don’t think Solskjaer is the man to take them forward.

“He’s done a decent job but when you’re at Manchester United it’s about winning trophies and winning Premier Leagues and he hasn’t got that cutting edge to do that.”

McAteer's comments come off the back of United's 4-2 defeat to Liverpool on Thursday, though the scoreline doesn't tell the full story.

United have faced a ridiculous fixture schedule of three Premier League matches in just five days and have nothing but pride to play for in the league, having secured their top-four spot.

Nevertheless, back-to-back defeats to Leicester and Liverpool have left United needing to respond with three games remaining in all competitions this term.
