Former Liverpool FC defender questions Manchester United deal for Daniel James

Former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol has questioned Manchester United's ambition following the signing of Daniel James from Swansea.

United are set to officially complete their first signing of the summer transfer window next week after they agreed a deal in principle to sign the Wales international.

James will become the first signing of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's reign at the club and the first addition as part of the club's ongoing rejuvenation strategy under the Norwegian coach.

However, Nicol has questioned the move for the 21-year-old and does not believe that he has the levels of experience required to make an immediate impact at Old Trafford.

Although the former Liverpool defender acknowledges James is a player with a bright future ahead of him he does not think the Welsh winger is the type of player needed by the club currently.

"This is your guy for the future,” Nicol said.

“This is who your guy is.

“But guess what, Manchester United don’t need guys for the future right now.

“They need people who can come in and step on the field and make a difference.

“And unfortunately, as good a prospect as Daniel James is, he’s not doing that."
