Former Liverpool FC captain sympathises with Man United's Harry Maguire after England red card

Former Liverpool captain Jamie Redknapp feels sorry for Manchester United defender Harry Maguire following his first-half red card for England against Denmark.

Maguire was shown two yellow cards in the opening 30 minutes of the Three Lions’ Nations League clash at Wembley.

It comes after a wobbly period for the United centre-back, who has been part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s defence that was ridiculed for their display in the 6-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur before the international break.

Maguire has yet to find his form this season, and questions have been raised about the former Leicester City man.

Dean Henderson's crossbar challenge

However, speaking on Sky Sports’ coverage of England vs Denmark, Redknapp shared some sympathy with Maguire:

"He panics. His left foot extends out and catches him, it looks a real nasty one. First of all, he gets the ball, but it’s the follow-through that the referee sees and when you endanger an opponent - that’s why he gives a second yellow,” Redknapp said.

“I feel sorry for him. It would be very easy for us to sit here and rip him apart - but he’s having a moment.

“He’s having a really bad moment in his career, he’s gonna have to somehow pull himself together. It’s a big weekend for Manchester United, he needs to get his confidence back because he’s a player really lacking confidence.

“There’s a lot going on in his life, and I think we sometimes forget that when you go out on a football field, you think everything is gonna be alright but we can genuinely see he’s struggling with his game at the moment.”
