Former Liverpool favourites among Premier League footballers who got mega rich after retiring

Premier League footballers' wages can be a topic that crops up from time to time.

Football is a billion-pound industry and players receive their own share of the sport’s riches.

Upon retirement, footballers could be forgiven for simply living off the wealth they accumulated as players - but there are a few notable exceptions.

Two ex-Liverpool strikers and a host of other familiar names have transferred their success on the pitch into other fields of business.

Michael Owen

The ex-Red scored 158 goals for Liverpool in 297 games, going on to win the Ballon d’OR before leaving for Real Madrid in 2004.

Now a regular pundit on BT Sport, Owen has still made millions away from the game that saw him also play for Newcastle and the Reds’ bitter rivals Manchester United.

The 41-year-old is a co-owner of the Manor House stables and has long been known for his love of horseracing.

Having owned winners at Ascot, Owen’s favourite horse Brown Panther earned multi-millions alone in winnings.

Robbie Fowler

Having struck up a partnership with Owen at Anfield, Fowler similarly burst into life in a Liverpool shirt, scoring 171 goals in 330 games during his first spell with the club.

Fowler has since gone into football management, coaching Thailand, Australia, and most recently East Bengal in the Indian Super League.

Away from football, however, the 46-year-old has been building a property portfolio that was most recently estimated to be worth more than £30m.

The former Liverpool forward also launched his own Property Academy seminars and has owned a sports promotion company since 1995.

Elsewhere among ex-Premier League stars, former Arsenal midfielder Mathieu Flamini caught the headlines when his co-ownership of GF Biochemicals was unearthed.

The company, which is estimated to be worth $28bn, is focussed on creating sustainable plastics from plant waste.

Former Sunderland striker Asamoah Gyan has also built a varied business empire called ‘Baby Jet’ since hanging up his boots, which includes boxing promotion, real estate, and even bottled water.

Former Watford player Ramon Vega moved into the world of finance and now reportedly runs a swish Mayfair-based hedge fund with around £625m invested.

And ex-Man City defender Sun Jihai founded HaiQiu Sports, a social media company.
