Former Liverpool defender Sebastian Coates suffers nightmare performance by conceding three penalties before getting sent off

Former Liverpool defender Sebastian Coates endured a night to forget for Sporting Libson as he conceded three penalties before being sent off.

The Uruguayan defender endured a nightmare match which saw him foul Rio Ave's Mehdi Taremi three times, which in the end saw him sent off for his troubles.

Coates was brought to Anfield in 2011 for the tune of £7m and remained on Merseyside for four years, making 21 appearances for the Reds.

However, after spell out on loan, he was finally sold by Brendan Rodgers to Sunderland in 2015.

Whilst he didn't enjoy much more luck in the North East, a 2017 move to Sporting Lisbon has seen him resurrect his career, although Saturday will prove a dark day when he reflects on his time in Portugal.

Coates received the first of his two yellow cards for hauling down Taremi in the opening six minutes of the game, before doing the same in the 89th minute and receiving his marching orders.

That ensured Lisbon suffered a 3-2 defeat, as Carvalho Sousa netted his second of the game in 91st-minute to win the game for the visitors.

Sousa had opened the scoring before Lisbon sparked a fightback with goals from Bruno Fernandes and Luciano Silva to give them a 2-1 lead seven minutes into the second-half.

However, a final five minutes to forget saw Coates concede his second penalty, which allowed Jeronimo to level the score with four minutes remaining before Sousa netted the winner in added time.
