Former Liverpool defender gives verdict on Everton signing of Niels Nkounkou

Niels Nkounkou may have only played a couple of games for Everton - but he is already catching the eye.

The young left-back earned plaudits following his debut against Salford City in the Carabao Cup recently.

And the 19-year-old backed that up with another solid display in the same competition at Fleetwood Town on Wednesday night.

Signed from Marseille over the summer, Nkounkou will be looking to challenge Lucas Digne for the Everton left-back spot following the retirement of Leighton Baines.

And while other more high profile signings may have grabbed the headlines, the teenager's arrival has certainly not gone entirely under the radar.

Former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock has hailed Nkounkou as a "magnificent find".

Warnock tweeted: "Have to say @Everton transfer business this summer has been excellent but it’s not only the household names that have impressed me, Niels Nkounkou is some player.

"A magnificent find. Bright future ahead and Digne has someone pushing him."

Nkounkou played 90 minutes as Everton beat Fleetwood 5-2 to book their place in the fourth round of the competition - even providing a cheeky assist for the final goal in the dying seconds.
