Former Liverpool defender Dominic Matteo given all clear after brain tumour treatment

Former Liverpool defender Dominic Matteo has been given the all clear following treatment on a brain tumour.

The 45-year-old was forced to undergo life-saving surgery on the issue when it was first diagnosed in November of last year.

He has since faced further treatment and rehabilitation, which finally came to an end on Wednesday.

Matteo wrote on Twitter: “Yesterday I got THE phone call, the one I’ve been praying for... my brain scan is clear.

“After 6 months of fear pain rehab surgery and treatment. I’m healthy! It feels unreal!

“The LGI (Leeds General Infirmary) & St James hospital saved my life. They were simply incredible.

“Thankyou will never be enough!”

Matteo made over 150 appearances in eight seasons in Liverpool’s first team after emerging from the club’s academy.

He went on to enjoy a successful stint at Leeds United before finishing his career with spells at Blackburn Rovers and Stoke City.

Born in Scotland but raised in Southport, Matteo also represented the country of his birth internationally on six occasions.

Since retiring, the former centre-back has moved into punditry, often being heard on commentary on LFCTV.
