Former Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren sends poignant message to Alisson after Man City defeat

Former Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren has jumped to the support of goalkeeper Alisson Becker after his two mistakes against Manchester City.

The Reds were beaten 4-1 by City at Anfield as Jurgen Klopp's side slumped to their third home defeat in a row.

Ilkay Gundogan eventually handed the visitors the lead on Merseyside after he had blazed a penalty over the bar. Mohamed Salah made no mistake from his spot-kick though, to offer the champions a way back into the clash.

However, Gundogan scored again before Raheem Sterling and Phil Foden wrapped the game up for Pep Guardiola's men.

There was a massive helping hand from Alisson, though, as the Brazil goalkeeper made two uncharacteristic mistakes which ended up in City's second and third goals.

For Gundogan's second, the 28-year-old scuffed a pass to Foden, who then ran to the byline and found his German team-mate in the middle with a tap-in.

Alisson then made a similar mistake just moments later when he passed it to Bernardo Silva, who chipped the ball to the far post for Sterling, practically on the line to find the empty net against his former side.

The result has led to plenty of criticism for the Liverpool goalkeeper's performance but one of his former teammates, Dejan Lovren has tweeted to offer his support.

Not long after the final whistle, he posted: "We learn from failure, not from success! #AB ", followed by a love heart emoji.

The Reds are now 10 points adrift of City at the top of the Premier League, with Guardiola's men still having a game in hand on them.

Liverpool are five points below second-place Manchester United and three adrift of Leicester City - who they face next weekend.

The champions now have a six-day break before their next league clash with the Foxes, which takes place at the King Power Stadium on Saturday.

Klopp's side have fared better on the road recently, with back-to-back away victories against Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United prior to the last two home defeats.
