Former Liverpool defender Daniel Agger rubbishes bizarre Russian arrest rumours

When Daniel Agger woke up on Monday morning, he perhaps wasn't expecting to later deny reports he had been jailed in Moscow.

But the former Liverpool defender was forced to take to social media in response to a bizarre story.

Outlets in Russia had suggested Agger was arrested on Saturday in Moscow for taking part in a protest in support of Alexei Navalny, the opposition leader who was jailed after being treated for a suspected federal security service poisoning.

There were even court documents confirming a "D M Agger" was due before a judge on Monday.

All, though, wasn't quite as it seemed.

Russian news site Baza reported that the Agger in question was actually a man formerly known as Dmitry Kendrel, who changed his name to that of the former Denmark international in 2009.

The story continues that Kendrel told police he was the ex-Red, but "his Russian was too good and he looked like a hobo".

Agger eventually knocked the entire story on the head.

“There is a bit of confusion out there," he tweeted. "I have never said: 'There is only one Daniel Agger..'

"And now we know for sure. The Daniel Agger mentioned in an incident in Moscow is not me.

"I’m safe and sound in Spain."

Agger, no doubt mindful of Liverpool's troubles in his old position of centre-back, then responded to an enquiry from Reds fan website Empire of the Kop asking if he still had his boots by.

"Of course," he replied, followed by a knowing wink.

Well, that's that sorted then.
