Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard tests positive for Covid-19

Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrad has tested positive for Covid-19.

Gerrard is now in charge of Premier League club Aston Villa and will miss their next two league games, Chelsea on Boxing Day and Leeds United on December 28.

Villa confirmed the news on Christmas Day via social media and a short statement on their official website.

Gerrard and his Villa side travelled to Anfield earlier this month and gave the Reds a tough test, though Jurgen Klopp's side eventually won 1-0 thanks to a second-half Mohamed Salah penalty.

The rise in Covid cases has seen a number of league games postponed, including Liverpool's Boxing Day fixture against the aforementioned Leeds.

The Reds next play on December 28 when they travel to the King Power Stadium to take on Leicester City, currently managed by ex-Reds boss Brendan Rodgers.
