Former Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers fumes over 'disrespectful' Manchester United claim

Former Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has branded rumours linking him with the Manchester United job as “not real”.

The Leicester boss has won plenty of plaudits for his work at the King Power, guiding the club to two 5th places and lifting the FA Cup for the first time in the club’s history.

Meanwhile, Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has come under increased scrutiny following a run of one win in his side’s last six league games.

Rodgers had previously been linked as a potential successor to Solskjaer but slammed the speculation in his pre-match press conference on Thursday.

“Firstly, it’s really disrespectful for you to ask the question when there is a manager in place at the club,” he said .

“Secondly, I can’t comment on it because it’s not real.

“I’m proud to be here at Leicester City. The only thing I’m thinking about is Chelsea and getting ready for that.

“It’s frustrating for supporters and my players, but from a personal perspective, it’s something that is in the modern game, but something I have no focus on whatsoever.”

Somewhat ironically, the ex-Reds boss helped fuel the growing pressure on Solskjaer last month by defeating United 4-2, prior to Liverpool ’s 5-0 demolition of their rivals at Old Trafford.

The Northern Irishman has enjoyed great success with Leicester since his arrival from Celtic in 2019, despite narrowly missing out on Champions League qualification in consecutive campaigns.

However, Rodgers has been consistent in his commitment to the Foxes, giving a similar answer when asked about the same topic at the end of October.

"I don't even think about it - and that's the brutal honesty," he said .

"I’m sure the supporters are probably tired of it. At Leicester, there is always a link.

"My focus is always here with Leicester and developing the football club on to that next level, where you're competing for European football and challenging for honours.

"Everyone here at the club, from the chief executive to the director of football - staff, players - we're all very much on the same path, same vision."
