Howard ‘Hopalong’ Cassady, member of Lions’ 1957 championship team, dies at 85

One of the key players for the Detroit Lions NFL championship team in 1957 has passed away. Running back and return man Howard “Hopalong” Cassady died on Friday morning, per the Columbus Dispatch. He was 85.

Cassady was the Lions’ first-round pick in 1956 (No. 3 overall) after winning the Heisman Trophy as a senior at Ohio State. His versatility as both a runner and receiver made him a valuable addition to the attack led by QB Bobby Layne.

In his seven seasons in Detroit, Cassady was also one of the NFL’s top return men. He caught a TD pass in the 1957 NFL championship game, the Lions’ last title, and also led that team in rushing.

Our condolences to the Cassady family.
