Former Lions GM Martin Mayhew interviews for the Texans vacancy

The Houston Texans stunned the NFL on Friday, firing general manager Brian Gaine less than 18 months into his 5-year contract to run the team.

One of the first potential replacements for Gaine is a familiar name and face for Detroit Lions fans: Martin Mayhew. Peter Schrager of the NFL Network reported the Texans are interviewing Mayhew on Sunday, a report quickly confirmed by other sources in Houston and Sirius XM NFL Radio.

Mayhew was the GM for the Lions from 2009-15 and the man largely responsible for the Jim Schwartz and Jim Caldwell coaching eras. He made several successful high-profile draft picks, including Matthew Stafford, Darius Slay and Ndamukong Suh. Mayhew had some notable misses as well (Laken Tomlinson, Jahvid Best). His Lions teams went 47-65.

Since being fired during the 2015 season, Mayhew has worked for the New York Giants and San Francisco 49ers. He was promoted to VP of Player Personnel in January by the 49ers.
