Former Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz will not be working for the Philadelphia Eagles anymore. The gruff Eagles defensive coordinator is letting his contract with Philadelphia expire and leaving on his own terms, and those terms could include walking away from the game.
Schwartz intends to take the 2021 football year off, per NFL.com. The 54-year-old is seriously thinking about retiring from coaching.
Schwartz, 54, has told those close to them that he will contemplate retirement after a 32-year coaching career, including 28 in the NFL and a Super Bowl win three years ago with the Eagles.
Philadelphia’s defense has struggled this season with injuries and a lack of talent. Schwartz has been in charge of the Eagles defense since 2016 after one season in Buffalo.
Prior to those stints, Schwartz served as the head coach in Detroit from 2009-2013. He compiled a 29-51 record as he brought the team out of the winless depths of the Matt Millen era.
