The former Bayer Leverkusen defender Emir Spahic has been banned from football for three months after fighting with security staff following a German Cup tie.

Spahic accepted the ban, which will keep him out of the game until 12 July, along with a fine of €20,000 (£14,000).

According to the German FA, the Bosnia-Herzegovina international attacked and injured two Leverkusen stewards after the home defeat against Bayern Munich on 8 April.

He was reportedly upset after the stewards refused to allow his friends entry to the dressing room area.

Video footage showed Spahic punching and head-butting two stewards with one of them losing several teeth.

The club released him after the brawl, saying: “The latest revelations from the case leave us no other choice.”

Spahic, 34, said at the time: “I regret my behaviour towards security staff.”

The centre-half, who joined the club in 2013, added: “I apologise to the people concerned and their families for my actions. I know this has also caused big problems for my club.”
