Former Leeds United winger Harry Kewell lands new top-flight coaching role

Forner Leeds United winger Harry Kewell has been given a role in Ange Postecoglu's coaching team at Celtic as the Australian looks to continue building his project in Scotland. The Glasgow side regained the Scottish Premiership title from Rangers in 21/22, whilst Kewell spent the majority of the season out of work, after he was sacked by Barnet in September.

Kewell has had a difficult start to his career as a manager, having been sacked from his last three jobs. His first role was at Crawley Town, where he walked out after 57 matches to take the job at Notts County. However, he was sacked after only 15 games at County.

The former Leeds man had a better reputation as a coach during his time at Watford and it appears to be that which Postecoglu is looking to exploit, as Celtic with have the additional challenge of competing in the Champions League next season. Fellow Australian and former Brighton & Hove Alibion goalkeeper, Matt Ryan has spoken of the connection between Kewell and the Celtic manager, as he said to the Australian Associated Press:

"Another well-respected, and deservedly so, name in football linking up there with Ange from what I can see is only going to be a positive. I wish them all the best if that is the case that eventuates that way and they're working together. Hopefully they can just keep growing a strong Australian name or respect in European football or in world football."

Whilst Kewell was a fan-favourite at his time at Elland Road, having become one of the most exciting wingers in the Premier League after coming through Leeds' academy, his reputation has since been severely marred.

The Australian moved to Liverpool in acrimonious circumstances in the early stages of the club's financial meltdown in the early 00s, before he made the move which many find too hard to forgive as he joined Turkish club, Galatasary. Kewell was in the Leeds team for the UEFA Cup semi-final before which Leeds fans, Christopher Loftus and Kevin Speight were murdered by a group of Galatasaray fans.
